Does the Lancia Delta Make a Good Chrysler

Yes. It's richer and better looking than I had expected, and has a rattling good, premium interior. Fiat should block most the smaller Lancia Ypsilon hatchback as a Chrysler, though, and it should hit opened up the Delta display so that exhibit attendees could sit inside it.
Best Promise? House Speaker Nancy Pelosi promises she'll bring added bi-partisan, bi-cameral deputation from legislature to visit the 2011 NAIAS. This year, the delegation's journeying was most public relations and hyping the success of our \"investments\" in GM and Chrysler. And yes, this exhibit haw rattling well not hit happened without the loan guarantees that ransomed GM and Chrysler. As long as Pelosi and Co. don't use the forum to near for an modify higher Corporate Average Fuel Economy standard, the fact that legislature is paying more attention to manufacturing and the auto industry isn't every bad.

Most Curious Celebrity Visit: I spotted Steven Rattner, the \"car czar\" who left most the time of GM's bankruptcy terminal year, meet as his investment firm's pension fund gossip heated up. Rattner allowed in his recent Fortune example that he doesn't know or care such most cars. So was Rattner meet checking up on the investment with which he got us involved, or does he find respite in car shows?

The Honda CR-Z is No CRX

Of instruction not; did you expect otherwise? My '87 CRX DX weighed 1900 pounds, was a blast to intend fast, and consistently got 33-41 mpg. The CR-Z looks a bit zaftig in the posterior quarters, but if it can get discover of its own way and handle well, with minimal understeer (like the CRX), it module be worth a ordinal look. Being an IMA hybrid, though, the CR-Z's redline is some 1000 rpm brief of the example CRX's, so the Mini Cooper S (and especially the upcoming sport coupe) and Honda Civic Si belike module remain the CRX's spiritual successors.

Most Significant News from Ford: Mark comic says author module ramp up production of its full-size sport/utility vehicles. author Expedition income rose 45 percent in December, and there's a 31-day supply. Lincoln has meet a 24-day cater of Navigators. A 60-day cater is the industry norm.

Why it's Significant: Because until pedal goes up to $4+ per gallon and stays there, our tastes in cars and trucks won't be quite the same as they are in Europe.

40 mpg: The bogie EPA highway fuel mileage number for automakers doing business in the U.S. author says both the newborn Focus and newborn Fiesta module achieve that with the newborn dry dual-clutch six-speed, which means the Focus module far outsell the Fiesta so daylong as they're priced within a couple-thousand dollars of each other. Chevy expects to get 40-mpg highway, too, discover of its 2011 Cruze.

But Will the Focus Sell? Yes, it's a jewel-like car. The litter looks like a shorter Mondeo. But until pedal hits $4, the 34-mpg highway Fusion module outsell it (the hybrid's mileage is higher of course). Despite what author thinks, the Focus four-door litter module outsell the Focus four-door hatchback in the U.S., though I prognosticate the Fiesta hatch module outsell the Fiesta sedan.

Best Use of a Non-Aligned Brand: Fiat Auto owns Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Lancia and part of Chrysler/Jeep/Dodge/Ram. It doesn't own Ferrari and Maserati, though -- that would be parent Fiat SpA. Yet, the Ferraris, Maseratis and their spokesmodels are all mixed in with the otherwise stark Chrysler display. Good way to entertainer crowds.

Volkswagen NCC new concept

Yes, the 177-horsepower, 45-mpg 1.4-liter TSI/hybrid powerplant may be vaporware. Add rear doors and a b-pillar, though, and I think you're hunting at the 2011 Jetta. Adding a fixed-top coupe embody call like the NCC's would seem a logical equal for the slow-selling EOS folding-hardtop convertible.

Biggest Anti-Climax: Toyota's announcement as it introduced its auto FT-CH organism concept, that Prius module become a whole brand of cars. We'll see eight new models, both dedicated hybrids and those supported on gasoline-only models, in the next few years.

Runner-up: Honda's plan to add hybrids to Acura's lineup.

Best in Show to Use an Internal Combustion Engine: GMC Granite

Being the Detroit-based programme guy, I tend to countenance at production intros as old news, even if we've never seen it before. This year's show was, unfortunately, a taste short on concepts. While Ford and Chevy are featuring small sedans and hatchbacks, I figure the way Americans will embrace \"small\" will be with crossovers and one-box vehicles like this Scion xB competitor. The GMC Granite is fashioned with enough personality to getting first-generation xB enthusiasts who were put off by the convention of the second-generation xB. And it's fashioned so you can flip the back seat down, flip the face passenger seat off to be nonconvergent with the center housing and carry a elevation bike without removing the face wheel. Cool.

Why We Need More Concepts: They inspire designers. Without them, cars and trucks would countenance likewise safe, likewise much alike. The organisation of a automobile or truck remains the most important surroundings for most customers. And yes, we'll still need auto shows for decades to come, so that consumers and the press can see the cars and concepts up close and personal.

2010 Detroit: Best of the North American International Auto Show

DETROIT - A grizzled stager who attended all of the 2010 North American International Auto Show press conferences here Monday and Tuesday says he lost count of automakers' use of the word \"sustainable.\" That much hasn't changed -- it's been the word of the exhibit since at least the mid-'00s. The difference, this time, is that while automobile vehicles grabbed much of the headlines, the big news this year is small cars.

Consider the new Ford Focus, perhaps the major star of the show, judging by press day coverage, or the Chevrolet Aveo RS \"concept\" car, the 1.4-liter turbo four-door hatchback headlike for creation late this year. The Aveo's only concept elements haw be the 19-inch wheels and edifice dual wear pipe, which Chevy hopes the sport compact receiver crowd adds to the suddenly interesting subcompact.

So let's call that the theme of the 2010 NAIAS. I didn't attend all the press conferences, because Motor Trend has a full body covering this show, and we separate them up, but I saw pretty much everything:

Best in Show: Unlike previous shows, modify last year's, there are no big standouts. Rather, the exhibit was filled with good, solid product, most of it quickly headlike for creation or lightly disguised future creation models. That said I'm feat to award the Audi e-tron Detroit concept because the German automaker continues to extend its design leadership to a rather pie-in-the-sky automobile sports car. Updated from the Frankfurt '09 e-tron, the crystal-blue Audi combines R8 styling in what looks more same a TT-sized coupe. The two side motors wage 201 horsepower and 1955 lb-ft of torque (that's not a typo -- that's apparently Audi's multiplied torque number) to the side wheels only (no quattro). What I same best, though, are the side sail panels flowing into horizontal taillamps that provide the car a mid-century \"Jetsons\"-era look. Sublime.
